Hi, just out of interest sakes, what are your feed prices in Q/Land. We are paying $7.00 from the grower for lucerne and $18 a bale from the fodder shop, Cereal hay is $12 a bale and Meadow is $11 per bale, Chaff is around the $18 to $20 dollar mark. $95.00 for a full set of shoes and $35 for a trim. How do we compare?;-)

We have had a nice wet season here in queensland and feed prices have dropped considerably on the last couple of years.
I Currently pay just on $12 for a bale of lucerne hay from a produce store and that is delivered and stacked in my shed. I am sure that from the grower at the moment it would be about $8 max. This is for good heavy bales of fresh lucerne that the horses don't leave any scraps lying around.
I pay about $18 for a bag of Oaten Chaff.
For Shoeing I pay $88 to have the shoes put back on - hot shoeing - custom made shoes. And to have a set made and put on, which is only about every third time as a minimum it is about $120. He comes about every 5 weeks. This guy is very good and has been the farrier for Olympic/World Games horses in the past.

We pay a bit more on the Sunshine Coast, QLD. I am paying $14 bale lucerne delivered from grower or $17 from feedstore. Lucerne chaff $30, oaten $26 delivered from grower -both extra $5 from store.
shoes $80 same shoes, $110 new shoes, $35 file. I did use another farrier who was $10 cheaper for each but yelled at my horses and upset them so I am happy to pay a little extra for my competent, trained and kind farrier, who hot shoes/ makes his own.
on the Goldy everything is more expensive....:(
$100 cold shod( he sound so im happy with that ) $12 shreaded thats practically prime ..2nd grade i think it is. or $13 at the produce and very stalky...

Have you checked your local paper for hay delivered. I have often bought from these guys. I saw an add this week for $8 delivered for Prime. With all the rain that we had there has to be some benefit! These guys usually have a minimum quantity that you have to buy. I think the one I use requires you to buy a minimum of 50 bales. Sometimes you can pair up with a few others though and save yourself a trip out to Gatton.

you all sound lucky that you have grass. Here in S.A. we are in total drought. We live in Mt. Compass which normaly has 950 ml of rain per year. we were lucky to get 650 last season and 550 the year before. paddocks are dust bowls and the horses hooves are as hard as iron. Feel sorry for the poor devils as there is no grazing at all. they are standing in 2 hecters of dust. we are luckier than most as we have contacts for fodder. most people are finding it tough to afford there horses. Lots of lovely beasts have gone to the doggers.
