Any opinions? Does anyone have any first-hand experience?

I'd appreciate any information.

Thanks! Nerida.

We have a stallion by Don Ramiro, GP Jack Sparrow. He is currently being campaigned in SA.

"Jack" is the quietest horse on the property. He has a great temperament and is very easy to train. He has a super walk and very uphill canter. His trot is becoming more expressive as he develops his strength. He also has a nice jumping technique.

Don Ramiro progeny are quite easy to spot.

Jack we believe is going to have a talent for passage and piaffe. ;)

I know this sounds like a fan club report but on temperament alone I think the Don Ramiro progeny are great. :p

We have crossed him over a couple of thoroughbred mares and hope to get some nice foals on the ground.

If you want me to provide a link to his web site just send me a message.

Cheers

Thanks so much, GGV!

Temperament is what it's all about as far as I'm concerned. I know a stallion doesn't guarantee a certain temperament of offspring, but just thought I'd do a bit of research in any case.

Cheers, Nerida.

Hi Nerida,

I bred my Larundel Gandalf mare to Don Ramiro and got a colt last October... I might be slightly bias but I think he's pretty special, he has the most amazing temperament anyone could ask for :) From the day he hit the ground he has had this look on his face that almost says "I've been here before"

Unfortunately I haven't got any really good pics but here he is with his mother at a week old.

Due to EI none of my girls were put in foal this year, but I am planning on putting this mare back in foal to Don Ramiro this season. Absolutely stoked with this one. I'm in Qld so shipped chilled semen up from Revelwood, and couldn't speak more highly of the professionalism dealing with them, semen was excellent quality and the mare went in foal first cycle. A welcome relief after several years of dramas breeding AI.

Cheers
Cindy

Thanks Cindy. I'm not looking to breed - actually looking at buying a young-ish Don Ramiro mare... and a sensible, willing temperament is really important to me. Your young man is absolutely beautiful - funnily enough the mare I'm looking at has a perfect star as a marking as well! Good to hear the temperament is passing down.

Cheers, Nerida.

Thanks Nerida,

Well you should be home and hosed getting to meet the mare before you buy (I presume?). Your first impression should be pretty accurate if my bloke is anything to go by :) I have a 2yo filly out of this same mare (different sire), she is prettier, they are both 'thinkers' but otherwise they are like chalk and cheese. She's too smart for her own good and cheeky, this little dude checks everything out from all angles, surveys the situation and then decides whether it is something to move away from or something to be explored :p

Put his sister in a new paddock and you get the buck and fart, hoon off into the sunset carry on, put him in a new paddock and he quietly wanders in for a look, has a pick at the grass, checks everything out quietly... Nothing seems to phase him at all and doing anything with him is an absolute joy :)

Cheers
Cindy

Oh yes, I'd never buy sight unseen! I just wanted to do my research - she's one of a number of horses I still need to sit on (the quest for the Right Horse is endless, it would seem!), and I've researched their sires too. I just was unfamiliar with Don Ramiro - and from what I understand he never really got the chance to perform due to injury. But good to know progeny seem to have even temperaments! That's at the top of my 'must have' list.

Nerida

Did you end up buying the Don Ramiro Mare? Did you know Don Ramiro passed away a few weeks ago?
I have a colt by him, he is almost two years old, and is really quiet and sensible, he seems very trainable, bright yet quiet.

Good Luck

Hi Sarah,

No, I didn't know he passed away, that's a shame. And no, I didn't end up buying the mare. She was stunning and quiet but just not quite right for me when I sat on her... she seemed trainable and a real character though. I'm sure she's got a big future ahead of her (she was only 4).

Cheers, Nerida.
