Questions from maiden breeder

That's the horse, not me....Is it true that the older the mare is before having her first foal the more difficulty she will have in conceiving?

And I have read somewhere that if I put my Trakehner mare to a non-Trakehner stallion it cannot be registered as a warmblood-have I got that right? IE you can breed Holsteiner to Hannoverian (for example) but not Trakehner to Hannoverian. I'm so confused!!!!:confused:

Hi Kathryn,
It all depends on the mare (age wise) on whether they conceive easily or not. We put an 11 yrold maiden mare i foal last year. She has had her foal now, but the season before that, (her first covering by the stallion) she was served for a week and she did not fall pregnant, but hte following season she had a healthy big colt.
whereas, some people i know, got there 17 year maiden mare in foal first time. but age is supposed to be an important factor, i think as well as in the conception, as it is for the actually birth. as i think the pregnacy can be a bit of strain on the older mares, who are not accostomed to providing for two.

as for the warmblood registration, im not sure about the restrictions of registering trakeners, but maybe you could ring up the society? im sure they would be able to help you.

Thanks for replying Jade-good to know my girl is not 'past it'at 7. And yes, I'll follow that up with the society.

mares who have foals between ages 7-12 usually have slightly bigger foals than older or younger apparently, so at 7 she's prime age I guess

7 would be an appropraite age to breed, however, get the vet to check her for cysts etc which may make conceiving difficult.
There are plenty of warmblood society's out there, and I'm sure you wouldn't have a drama getting your resulting foal registered. May just need to get mare broodmare registered or similar first.
I have found ACE to be very helpful and uncomplicated.
