View Full Version : EI Confirmed in Samford Valley
Susan

:(:( Just had a phone call from our local vet to alert SEG members of a confirmed EI case in Samford Valley. Iters in Samford may want to be extra vigilant and pass the word
From the Samford Valley vets...
A property at Mt Nebo has, today, tested positive for Equine Influenza. Testing of suspect horses with any respiratory symptoms has been and will continue as required within Samford Valley. This is the first confirmed case of the equine flu in Samford Valley. The affected horses have received treatment and are recovering well.
These horses are long term residents on an isolated property. The source of the virus has yet to be determined. To date, there has been no identified direct transfer of the virus, the horses being isolated and the owners not in contact with infected horses or properties. Infection via windborne spread has an almost zero probability of occurrence and therefore, the virus can only have been transferred via indirect methods.
The presence of an infected property at Mt Nebo necessitates the DPI placing a 10km zone around this infected property. This zone will include Mt Nebo, Mt Glorious, Lake Manchester area and will extend into Highvale and Wight’s Mtn. Every effort should be made to prevent further spread of the virus and this can be achieved.
It is now more important than ever that all horse owners continue to practice the highest level of biosecurity to prevent the spread of the virus to their property.

I heard about this tonight from some friends who had Judy out to their horses today - nothing to do with EI though.
All Samford people will have to stick together and be really careful. Hopefully it won't travel down the mountain.

This may seem like a dumb question but is it normal to have a variance in the horses temperature? I'm only able to take my horses temps once a day and I do this in the morning.
This morning i've had the first biggest jump, well I wouldn't say big by .4 - .5 of a degree....
These are the temps for the past few days

I think it can fluctuate a bit, depending on the weather, rugs and time you take the temp etc.

That's what I thought but I will keep an eye on it. I've been taking it at the same time each day.

I know. I've only recently recovered from my premature foal related vet bill. I have one pony with Cushings that I'm not convinced will come out of this well. Take some comfort in knowing that the DPI will pay up to $200 per horse in EI related vet bills - on their website somewhere.
I was trying to cut down on stops to buy chips on the way home, what with the no riding and inevitable weight gain, but maybe I'll abandon that and stock up on chips and burger goods for you :)

Yep we're worried about Kate's old pony that lives with Gypsie, he has cushings. We also have a 29 year pony with a permanent cough that was dumped with us that I am very concerned about, Comet will absolutley freak if she goes. Thankfully I have a real job that pays for daughter's horses, I think I'll be working till I'm about 110years old. I'm hoping business will start to pick up again now school is back, there has been a definite drop in the last 5-6 weeks and the only thing I can think of is the EI problem or maybe it's just the food. O well there are many around who are in far worse shape than me.
Phoebe
12-10-2007, 02.28 pm
Nah, couldn't be the food :)
I used to work at the pizza shop and business always slowed down when the hot weather set in (and often during school holidays too). Just wait til Christmas gets closer though :icon_eek:
Does your cushings pony get any medication? There is now a far cheaper option available, costs around $80 something for 80 days worth (as opposed to $250 for 100 days). It has made the world of difference with my pony, who nearly pegged out with a sinus infection before I started the meds a few years ago. Let me know if you want more info.

Hehe oh how I really wish it was still like that!!!! the only bad week that we've had in the past....6 months was last week. This week since half of Samford lost power on Tuesday everyone decided that pizza was the go....gah!!

I am thinking that Samford will get it, sooner or later. Maybe I am having horse-withdrawal symptoms but am thinking 'just bring it on so we get over it ASAP'.
(Note; I am not suggesting that we shouldn't be careful with biosecurity etc....having my mare at Madison Park means that I haven't seen her since the start off the whole thing! Fortunately Karyn sends us pictures....).
If the DPI intends to let us travel around from Christmas onwards, that would mean that they let the disease take its course, wouldn't it? In that case, we'll get it anyway.
Phoebe
12-10-2007, 03.09 pm
Depends Saskia. There was mention of vaccinating some inner buffers within the main buffer zone to try and minimise the spread within the red zone. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.
Definitely is looking a bit gloomy for Samford people now... up until a day ago I thought we might have half a chance of avoiding it.

Today, meanwhile, I am busy daydreaming about doing the best ever test at the 2007 State Championships! Galanthus scored 75% in his Elementary test, and Latin Coda did a scorcher of a Novice test (after winning the prelim challenge yesterday ;) ) Just waiting on the Novice scores before I float home for the night.
CANT WAIT till the new state centre is finished. This travelling backwards/forwards for 3 days in a row is a nightmare!
.............oh wouldnt it be nice if all we had to gripe over was lack of stables at this year's States?!!!!

I just found out some info on the case in Clear Mountain. I'm pretty sure it's down the end of Branch Creek Road or Buranda one of the two (same road as Vito R) some lady with donkeys went onto a property with EI and it came back with her. Not sure if it was intentional or not. A friend of mine called and told me as she was speaking to the neighbours of the property that is infected. They have Clydesdales but I’m not sure if they have contracted it or not. Apparently the people haven't put any signs up or anything....

Hi Simone, Judging by this message (today's update) on the DPI Qld website, there probably wont be any more quarantine signs posted:
"Please note There are no longer individual quarantined properties in the Red Zone because the entire Red Zone in south east Queensland is designated a Restricted Area. Riding a horse off its current property or relocating a horse via truck or float is still banned in the Red Zone, unless a specific permit is provided by the DPI&F. All horse owners must abide by these regulations."
Seems a fairly ominous sign that they are now fully expecting the entire red zone to become infected one way or another. Where does that leave us all when we are able to travel and compete again????? An awful lot of aligators and a jolly big swamp!!!
What was that you said Gypsie..... "oh dear". I second that.
P.S. everyone, would never have imagined in a million years that this would be the subject of my first ever dressageit comment.

I still think that people should be responsible and put up signs if their property is infected so that it reduces the spread via humans.

Has anyone had a look at the Equine Influenza Infected Clusters map on the DPI website. http://www2.dpi.qld.gov.au/extra/EI/maps/weekly/EI-WeeklyIPs-2007-10-15.gif
The dark pink areas in Pine Rivers seem a lot larger than the 4 properties now being reported, and the map was last updated 15 October. If you look at the Gatton area which supposedly now has 8 properties officially infected, the difference is huge.
Totally agree with you Simone re the posting of signs but not just for infected properties. Anyone with horses on their property can put up a sign that warns not just other horse people but the general public about the infectious nature of EI and what you respect re biosecurity and decontamination etc. when anyone wants to enter your property. I was emailed a copy of one about 2 weeks ago by Jane Myer. If you or anyone else would like a copy PM me and I will forward it to you. Not sure if I can post it here???, but it is simple and easy to understand. Let me know.

EI arrived on my place on Sunday via airmail from a nearby thoroughbred stud who was confirmed mid last week. I informed the DPI on monday morning and same morning I put signs on my front entrance for people not to enter as it was a suspected EI infected property.
Went for a drive yesterday past the entrance of the thoroughbred stud who had it before me and they have absolutely no signs or shut gate or anything. and neither do their neighbouring properties who also have thoroughbreds.
there is definitely 2 levels of conscious regarding what is the right thing to do.

Any news on the vaccinations for a mini buffer out Mt Samson way?
I have 2 ponies on a very extended holiday at a friend's place out that way. (Somehow I am wondering if I'll be able to get them back as they have become quite attached to them:D) I have registered them on the DPI website at that property- is that what they are using to track down horses?)
I don't care if they are vaccinated or not to be honest. They are healthy, round and in good spirits. I just want to do the right thing if they are inside the buffer. (You can't see them from the road- in fact you wouldn't even know they are there....:p)

My horse is at madison park and I got a phone call from karyn this morning that the first horses are showing the signs (the snotty noses and coughing).
Karyn has taken such good biosecurity measures (including not allowing agistees to visit directly from the start!) and still that doesn't keep it away so I guess everyone in the area should be prepared for EI to arrive in the next days.
It makes me wonder whether it is still possible to contain EI but let's try to be careful and try to what we can to prevent further spread. And cuddle and spoil our horses on their way to recovery....

The dry hacking cough is the main part of it. But yellow snot is not good anyway.
My oldie has coped well. The snot was minimal, stayed opaque at the worst. The cough and subsequent farts - very loud, whilst coughing was the worst part (here was me in the house going, poor Toby *giggle*)
