I've recently seen 'medicine boots' advertised for sale as being good for supporting suspensory ligaments. Has anyone found them to be effective for this? or is it a gimmick? in case your all wondering they are like normal tendon boots but have and extra 'wrap' that straps below the fetlock.

Hi

I just bought some of these not to long ago... I really like them but i don't know about the supporting suspensory ligaments?

I bought some to give my boy the extra support as he kept getting a really swollen fetlock joint. He really likes them and it hasn't swollen since.

Anyway doesnt help much but I think they are great.

Apparently for a boot to "support the tendons/ligaments" etc, they have to be put on tighter than is safe for the other structures in the leg. Boots can only protect, not support, according to my reputable source anyway :)

I've used them forever, and swear by them. Well, I haven't had a soft tissue injury since I started using them, which may be more good luck than good management, but I'm not going to risk finding out otherwise. At the very least, they provide a more extensive coverage, and therefore superficial protection, of the lower limb.

Tracy and I got a 4 pack (of SMB Elites) at the Las Vegas WCF for $140.00!! They usually retail at $180 a pair!

I'm looking for a set of these, there are a few similar brands on the market, which brand do you use and where can I get them? I've searched through ebay but can only find cheapies.

Hi Margaret,

Flying Changes (http://www.flyingchanges.com.au) has the Professional Choice Medicine boots. They are located at Kenmore and also do a mail order service.

Yep I've been using them for years. Was first introduced to them when strapping/training pacers as they help to prevent over-extension of the suspensory ligament. We used them on all the horses that had had previous injuries to them and never had any re-occur. I've found the top of the range(Brumby has a few cheaper versions out too) Brumby brand to be very good. My pair of Brumbys are nearly 8yrs od, been used on the pacers before I used them on my galloway and they're still going strong. You do have to put them on very firmly though, otherwise they slip and are of no support use at all. I've seen many people put them on not tight enough and they end up halfway down horses pasterns. They seem to be more of a hinderance there than any sort of help.

OK, have had a look at both the standard and the elite Professionals Choice boots, the only difference I could see (apart from the price!) was that the elite have binding sewn around the edges and the standard ones don't. My concern with the elite is that the binding wouldn't have as much 'give' in them where the the others would. Does anyone using the elite have a problem with the binding being tight?
