I recently got diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis (after sitting in a car for long hours) and I'm on the drug warfrin (like rat sac!). Any way, I'm to be on the drug for 3 months and as the drug thins the blood I cannot risk an injury. My horse has been with my instructor for two weeks and I'd love to keep him there and in work but can't afford it. Are there any cheaper options for keeping my horse in work? Would anyone take the risk and ride (my hsband would kill me for even considering it)? My horse is not dead quiet and I had a head injury after a fall 18mths ago. Ok, yeah, I shouldn't ride ahhhhhhhhhhhh I ride only at Assoc. Novice level and am frustrated by the never forending sent backs over the years. How do I stay motivated? How do I keep my horse in work with out spending heaps? Help...................
You could try lungeing him at home twice or three times a week. If you know what you're doing (and your instructor can help here) then there is a lot you can do with lungeing and long-reining. And it's fun, and you can see how your horse is moving.

Hi Belinda, I would take the risk but that's just me. I wasn't meant to ride for 3- 6 months after my fall. For the first two months after I was out of hospital I kept lunging my horse to keep him in work and as Ann said it is good because you can see how your horse is moving. I can't risk falling off either for the next 12 months but I’ve still been riding just taking things extra cautiously. I’m horse isn’t dead quiet either (heck he did break my back) If you decide to ride just make sure someone is there with you and try to eliminate anything that may cause some sort of fright! You could keep taking your horse to your instructors for lessons once a week and have your instructor ride your horse for you.

Hi, Thanks for the ideas guys. Wow, Simone, breaking your back that's pretty scarey stuff. What happened?
I think I'll definately start lunging. I've never long reined so maybe this is my opportunity to learn. Hopefully my instructor can come and give my horse a ride too. My Instructor's had the horse for two weeks and I was hoping he'd come back a GP horse! Is that a bit much to ask???????????? Since I'm currently bored sh..less can you recommend any other horsie web sites? Or maybe I should just start more threads?? Cheers
Belinda, don't be naughty! Your husband isn't the only one that would kill you if you got back up before the DVT is all sorted out!!!
Learning how to long rein is on my "to do" list. I just bought Phillipe Karl's book on long reining and it looks fabulous...ok...so far I've only looked at the pretty pictures! But I am planning on taking lessons in the near future.
Horsie website's? I could give you a long list of them, but I read in the "how to use" forum something about not posting links. Is it safe if I pm them? Sorry...newbie here.

I'm sure other people have put links to other sites. I'm sure Anne will advise us!

Hi Belinda,
I think it is quite possible and plausible to find people with some experience who would be willing to ride your horse for you. If you would like your horse to stay at your place (so you can keep an eye on things and still be an important part of his training etc), specify this, or even that they only ride while you are there watching. Mention it to your instructor coz they might know of suitable people to match your horse, or ask people at competitions if they know of someone suitable.
Good luck with it all.
but I read in the "how to use" forum something about not posting links. What you read in there are instructions on how to post links, not not to post them. ;)
For reasons explained in this thread (showthread.php?t=774) I prefer people to use the masking method rather than just posting the text of the link.
Since I'm currently bored sh..less can you recommend any other horsie web sites?

Err... I don't know...
watch videos
organise your test sheets chronologically and maybe set up a spreadsheet with the individual mark to calculate the % improvement over the years?
read books on Dressage, long reining, first aid for horses, stable management, pasture improvement (if you learn this, please pass on the knowledge via this forum ;) :D )
Set up a photo album with your competition photos and your championship sash from last year's Samford Show
Does this help???

Hi Ivanka, fellow dressageITer Jane, kindly delivered me a pile of horsie magazines and books to read. Though one fictional horse story was about suicide and horses dying! (Sorry Jane I just had to mention that!). The magazines are great and I'm starting to drive friends crazy with my newly aquired horsie trivia. I'm also wanting to spend money. No horsie videos but I have watched a lot of Kath and Kim. I'm starting to relate to the characters which is pretty scarey. As for setting up a spreadsheet for my dressage, well, it wouldn't be very long. I've never even kept a record of show results or a training diary. I am so slack. I think I can count the number of dressage tests I've ridden on my hands so it would be a short spreadsheet! The photo of Elmo with his Samford sash, that's framed and on the wall along with several other photos of Elmo (and not one of the husband!). I think I need help!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the ideas keep them coming. Hope your day got better? Is it a full moon 'cause everyone I talk to is having a crappy time in one way or another.................by the way do do you know what the story is with the missing white, minature stallion in Samford? I keep hoping he'll turn up at my place and visit my mini mare! Cheers

Well if totally bored I can drop off um well 7 boxes of 'Your Horse' mags with a dabble of some US ones as well. Will send the two boxes you have already read just to make my husband excited and believing that they have gone!
I was planning on cutting them up and putting the articles into folders (breaking it down to types of training) - that plan was for my maternity leave before the terror was born and of course we know the story but a quick explanation for the others - had 3.5 weeks to go, went on leave on the friday, waters broke at a dinner party with oh 250 other people at the Radisson down the coast. Had him the sunday and added bonus was a broken tailbone.

Oh my Golly Nikki, we live at the end of the street the Radisson is on and didn't hear a thing :) So did you make it back to Bris for the event or did you have to dash to one of our local hospitals? I believe some babies actually do arrive within a reasonable amount of time, unlike mine. 18 hours of labour gives you plenty of time to walk, read, have a back rub, take a shower, scream for pethadine.......
13718, hope all goes well for you. Maybe you could learn to crochet and make us all colour co-ordinated sweat rugs for this summer:)

I'm not sure about crocheted sweat rugs but if I stay at home any longer I'll take up basket weaving. Maybe woven feed bins?

Or... we can all bring our white saddle cloths to you and you can stich the velcro on it for the numbers

We made it home, I had only packed the bag the day before. Went into the Wesley and went to sleep in the labour room. Woke up going OOOO at 2am and asked for an epi thinking it would be hours till they got there - took 2 minutes. Rest was fine till the tailbone.
You know I will never go back to the Radisson - I had an instant dislike for the place, before we got there the hotel had stuffed up some bookings and my husband had had a few rude phonecalls from PO'd people and we had joked that we should not go and say I went into labour.....
Polar fleece neck rugs Belinda :)

Oooo, yes please, still haven't done Dan's for Rocky, now she's got Squig starting and Toren's got little Beau coming out at NADEC this month. Can only do so much with safety pins......

As if chidlbirth isn't hard enough :( and I can sympathize with the broken tailbone, mine
(an accidental knee to the rear end) took ages to heal. Bad luck about the Radisson, it's used to be quite good early on but I think it's dropped off a lot. Actually the whole of Palm Meadows has lost the polish it once had. I only agreed to move off acreage because the estate was supposed to have an equestrian centre being built. It never eventuated and sixteen years later I'm still agisting horses. Hopefully not much longer :)

Ivanka, I'm afraid I don't have a domestic bone in my body! I'd probably staple it on or glue it! Actually, I'd cop out completly and buy a bridle number holder or the saddle blankets with the little pocket on the side. One idea I had after watching a boxer (fighter not dog breed) on telly with an advert on his back was we could paint adverts all over our horses! We could paint a advertisment on Ovitz's arse I mean rump! He's got a nice large rump so we could get lots of sponsors! It would have to be in the Associate classes though I'm not sure of the rules re advertising. Anyone reading this who think I'm serious I'm not I'm just going insane doing nothing. Though I did see a photo of dairy cattle wearing advertsing rugs next to a highway! Well, must get back to the basket weaving. Had another blood test and still having daily injections. God help me if I become a insulin dependant diabetic. I have a whole new appreciation for people on long term medication, illness etc. My drama's pale in comparison. On the horse front since this IS a horsie web site! I collected Elmo from Leasa's. Why she couldn't turn Elmo into a GP horse in 2 weeks is beyond me??? The mini mare was thrilled to see Elmo a did a "peppy la phew'" (cartoon skunk) impersonation. She galloped the paddock with her tail stuck over her back. Sooooooooo cute. Haven't started any lunging as I'm still not to do anything. Keen at least to try and keep Elmo fit and doing something. Hopefully Leasa can come out and keep him tuned up for me.
Hey Nikki, thanks for the offer of the mags. I think I've read most of yours already minus the ones purchased since I left work! Might still take you up on the offer. Hopefully I'll be able to start at least lunging Elmo soon. Cheers
