Can anyone recommend a good horse dentist/vet who does dentistry in, around, or willing to travel to, the Ipswich area? My usual one appears to have dropped of the face of the earth  and my boys are past due.

The vet my friends use sedates every time but I'd rather not do that unnecessarily. And I've heard too many bad stories to get out someone I haven't heard anything about. Any suggestions appreciated.

Hi Leisha I have used a guy by the name of Stewart Craig from Lynx dentistry in Toowoomba - he did 4 horses young to experienced and didn't sedate them - I had a good experience and everyone I spoke to had only good things to say about him!!
I will PM you with his mobile number.

Hi Leisha, I'm around Ipswich area too, and I use Nathan Anthony from Anstead Equine. He DOES sedate the horses, but he uses power tools, so has to, really. Its so quick, and his equipment is top of the range. I'd never go back to the ol' hand in mouth diagnosis again after being able to actually SEE whats wrong and what they've done. Plus, one of our fillies was starting to develop a 'wave' mouth, and no amount of rasping is going to fix that! Obviously, power tools in the wrong hands are not a good thing, but Nathan is extremely qualified in equine dentistry, and has done super jobs on our ponies.

No that is right, unless the dentist is a vet they cannot administer a sedative. I was using a dentist and when I first got Bubbles he needed work done with power tools so I arranged my usuall vet (who doesn't do dentistry) to come out and sedate for the dentist. Problem teeth were sorted and now for maintenance he should be right with the file. I wasn't keen on having him sedated every time since its supposed to be a bit more of a risk for older horses and becasue of his age he has to be done every 6 months.

Absolutely, the only person who is legally allowed to inject another person's horse (with ANYTHING - tetanus, ABs, homeopathics etc) is a qualified vet.

I've used Stew Craig for years and never had any problems. He doesn't sedate because, as Anita says, he's not a vet but he is a qualified dentist. I usually get the ridden ones done once a year with the vet so they are sedated and power tools used, then use Stew at the six month mark for their 'check up' so to speak. The other horses at home I just let Stew do every six months or twelve months depending on which horse it is and how old they are. The vet commented on how well they had been done so Stew does a great job. Highly recommended.

I go to Nathan - or Adele - same surgury. Cheaper to go to them. My fellow is 20 this year and is fine with sedation - as is the older fellow at 25. Both big horses.

Was wondering why you need a vet to inject Tetanus needle??

Can't you just buy the tetanus/strangles injections from the produce?!?!
